Black History Month at MHS

Black History Month is a time to celebrate and learn about the achievements and contributions of people of African descent throughout history. It is also a time to reflect on the struggles and challenges that they faced and continue to face in the fight for equality and justice.

Black History Month gives our students an opportunity to learn about the rich and diverse history of black people around the world. It can help students develop a better understanding of different cultures, perspectives and experiences. It can also inspire students to appreciate the achievements of black people in various fields such as science, art, literature, sports and politics. By learning about black history, students can also learn about the values of courage, resilience, perseverance and creativity that black people demonstrated throughout history. Black History Month is not only for black students, but for all students who want to learn more about the world and themselves.

In 2023, the theme for BHM is ‘saluting our sisters’. In lessons and through the tutor programme students have been learning about black women and their contributions throughout history. As well as important black women who shaped history hundreds of years ago, we have been finding out about local women who have made an enormous difference within their communities in Bristol in more recent years. It has been a delight to also see that our tutor time reading has been focussed on books both written by black female authors or about black female protagonists.
